In this episode of Successful Mama, Erica DeSpain shares how a blind date led to becoming a military wife. Blogging about her life helped keep her busy and prepared her for what was ahead- a business serving local businesses and residents through storytelling.

Erica DeSpain had no idea what was in store for her when she hopped on a plane for a blind date in 2008. The road ahead involved moving across the country and two pregnancies while her husband, Jamie, was deployed. Erica spent much of her time writing and sharing her life on her blog, Whimsical September.

When faced with the decision of where to live after military life, Shannon and Jamie made a detailed list of what a city must offer for them to call it home. This list led them back to Madison, Alabama, and now they can’t imagine their family of five being anywhere else. In 2020, Erica announced she would be starting her new business, All Things Madison, where she could connect local businesses and residents, serving both in the process. She had no idea that the pandemic would hit full force and require a dramatic pivot for her business debut. Erica has grown All Things Madison while keeping strict boundaries for family time and her mental health. Go ahead and grab those earbuds, because you’re going to want to settle in and hear what she has learned along the way.
